Spring Cleaning...I haven't written a column for awhile and I'm feeling a bit rusty.  I'm gonna keep this one short and sweet, because the combined forces of procrastination (I'm waaaay past the S&L deadline) and inspiration are at a bit of a loggerhead with me these days.  There's always a column spiraling through my head, but when challenged to sit down in front of the computer and actually get all of the bits and pieces out of my head and on to the screen, it's like pulling teeth or putting off that all important spring cleaning.  You know that you'll be glad when you actually do it.  It's just the doing that becomes another obstacle to overcome.  Another addition to the eternal 'to-do' list.
Music for the Masses...
I'm not always a big fan of fests...too many bands in one day tends to make me a little grouchy.  On the upside, you tend to see lots of familiar faces from across the country in one place and that family reunion quality makes all the difference when all the music starts to sound the same.  Christine came out to attend the Chicago festivities with us and we had a fucking blast!  We rocked the goth dance floor with Michelle, Skell, To What End? and Riistetyt (well...they rocked and I drank Stella Artois and loved every minute of watching the punks dance to Depeche Mode, Ministry and New Order), we slept in the van, ate amazing food (especially the amazingly bad burrito/bad direction combo!), got crazed on caffeine and sparks (gotta love the tell-tale orange lips!), sold some books for AK Press, watched the various punk rock soap operas spin out of control and just had fantastic weekend.  Please be on the lookout for Chicago's own CONDENADA who (for me) absolutely stole the whole fucking Sunday show.  4 women full of fire and passion and politics that rocked me in a way that I'd almost forgotten was possible.  I spent their whole set with a huge ass grin on my face, my fist in the air and chills running down my spine...and the fact that they had a Big Boys song in the set list was just the icing on the cake.  TO WHAT END? and I ATTACK were also amazing.  A big round of applesauce to Chicago and Sweden.  Thanks for the inspiration!  Thanks also to Chloe, for being the best adopted 'punk-rock' daughter ever.
Find Time To Breathe...
I know that this is not exactly a 'punk' topic, but it is an important one that all of us need to find time for.  I finally found an awesome place to do yoga here in Milwaukee (the Riverwest Yogashala) with an incredible teacher (Jason Cummings) and I've really rediscovered how important it is to just take some time and concentrate on breathing.  One of the most important factors of yoga is the breathing.  We take breathing for granted...it is part of life. What we all need to remember is that sometimes you have to make a little extra time for yourself and just breathe.  It doesn't have to be yoga.  Just find a corner in your house, or out in a park, or even in your car.  Close your eyes, assume a comfortable posture and try to quiet your mind and breathe in and out really deeply for at least 5 to 10 minutes.  This world we live in is just crazy and I don't foresee it getting any better any time soon.  You might be surprised how calming/stress relieving it can be to make yourself just stop and take a little time to shut out the world and enjoy a little extra oxygen.  Of course, I recommend this combined with (that dirty little word) yoga.  Remember, Punks is Hippies!!!  Hee-Hee.  Long live the peace punks.
Sappy Ending...
Thanks so much to Christine, Arwen Curry, Golnar, Clara, Martin, Dug, Robert, Kelli-Kelli, John & Polly, Ramsey, Kate and ALL YOU CAN EAT for making my January trip to San Francisco so fucking incredible.  Extra special thanks to Floyd for making it all actually happen.  You're the best, Mr. Floyd!
In conclusion, I'm really excited about the upcoming gardening season.  Our household plans to double the size of our garden project.  As long as we don't plant too many tomatoes again this year, everything should be just great.  Here's to a summer filled with punk rock, farmer's markets, dumpster diving, bike riding, refreshing beverages (herbal, alcohol, caffeine & water) and protesting all the bullshit coming from the religious right wing wackos and the horrifying horseshit of the bush administration.  Take care of yourselves.  —karoline  c/o Fuel Cafe/ 818 E.
